In de periode rond 1900 beleefde Amsterdam een bloeitijd. De oude elite van kooplieden en regenten kreeg gezelschap van ondernemende burgers die deel gingen uitmaken van de economische bovenlaag. Een woning aan de befaamde grachten werd beschouwd als bekroning van het stijgen op de maatschappelijke ladder.

In een nieuw verworven stadshuis hoorde een ‘modern’ interieur, vaak uitgevoerd in de toen populaire neostijlen, die teruggrepen op de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw: eetkamers kregen een stemmige Gouden Eeuw-sfeer, salons een wufte Franse uitstraling. Maar er werden ook interieurs op eigentijdse wijze ingericht, in art nouveau-stijl en iets later in Amsterdamse School-stijl. Daarnaast deden technologische snufjes als de vaste stofzuiger hun intrede.

In de inleiding wordt een beeld geschetst van het wonen in de Amsterdamse grachtengordel, waarna tien prachtig gefotografeerde interieurs in detail worden beschreven.

De publicatie is gemaakt in het kader van het onderzoeksproject Van grachtenhuis tot villa in het groen van de Stichting Historische Interieurs in Amsterdam.
