Dit boek is vervaardigd naar aanleiding van het feit dat het op 23 mei 2021 precies vijftig jaar geleden was dat Shell voor het eerst haar vernieuwde schelp-logo, ontworpen door de wereldberoemde industrieel vormgever Raymond Loewy, aan de buitenwereld presenteerde.  Op basis van grondig  onderzoek  is de evolutie en het gebruik van het Shell-logo sinds 1900 beschreven.

Vanaf het begin van de twintigste eeuw begon de motorisering van het wegverkeer serieuzere vormen aan te nemen. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog zette deze ontwikkeling zich in nog hoger tempo voort. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat de ontwikkeling van het Shell-logo voor een deel verbonden is met de auto en haar bestuurders, voor wie het schelp-logo met de karakteristieke kleuren rood en geel tevens het beste zichtbaar was en is. Het boek besteedt dan ook ruime aandacht aan de verschillende producten en diensten die Shell in de loop der tijd voor de auto ontwikkelde en geeft inzicht in de daarbij behorende marketingactiviteiten.

Tevens is er met de opkomst van de elektrische auto en de door waterstof aangedreven auto aandacht voor recente ontwikkelingen op het gebied van de energietransitie.
